Understanding What You Have

A Collection Is More Than a Box of Old Coins.

I know handling an estate is complicated enough without being expected to understand a collection that may have taken decades to assemble.

Rare coins and paper money can have value that isn't immediately obvious. Age, condition, scarcity, variety, precious-metal content and collector demand all matter when I evaluate numismatic material.

Whether you're a family member, executor, trustee or estate professional, you don't need to become a coin expert before contacting me. I can help determine what is in the collection and discuss the appropriate next step.

What I Can Help Evaluate

In my experience, collections take many forms. An estate may contain carefully cataloged rarities, boxes accumulated over a lifetime, or material the family knows very little about.

01

Rare Coins

Individual rarities, complete sets, collections and accumulated U.S. coinage.

02

Paper Money

Collectible currency and paper money contained within estates and collections.

03

Gold & Silver

Bullion, precious-metal issues and related material held as part of an estate.

04

Complete Collections

Collections and accumulations assembled over years or even generations.

Before You Begin

Inherited a Collection?
Leave It As You Found It.

If you aren't familiar with coins or paper money, one of the best first steps is often simply to preserve the collection in its current state until it can be properly evaluated.

01

Don't Clean the Coins

Cleaning can permanently alter a coin's surfaces and may significantly affect its collector value.

02

Keep Original Holders

Avoid unnecessarily removing coins from albums, holders, envelopes or other original storage.

03

Save the Records

Notes, labels, receipts and other records associated with a collection may provide useful information.

04

Keep It Organized

If the collector organized material into groups, boxes or albums, try to preserve that organization until it is reviewed.

The Right Approach

Written Appraisal or Professional Evaluation?

I provide both written appraisals and professional evaluations for estate and probate purposes.

Every estate is different. The size and composition of the collection, the purpose of the appraisal and the circumstances surrounding the estate all affect how I approach it.

Rather than trying to fit every collection into a one-size-fits-all process, I prefer to begin with a conversation.

Send me a message or call me at 307-690-0366 and tell me a little about the estate and what you need.

Decades in Numismatics

Experience You Can Talk To.

My interest in rare coins and paper money began at the age of ten. By fourteen I was setting up my own booth at coin shows, and in 1976 I opened a retail coin store in Sarasota, Florida.

Through the years I have also used radio and television to educate collectors and share the history behind money.

Today, from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, I bring that lifetime of numismatic experience to collectors, families and professionals throughout the country.

Common Questions

Estate & Probate Appraisal FAQ

Do you provide written estate appraisals?

Yes. I provide both written appraisals and professional evaluations for estate and probate purposes. Contact me to discuss the estate and what type of appraisal is needed.

Do you work with executors and trustees?

Yes. I work with families and individuals as well as executors, trustees and estate professionals.

Do you provide appraisal services outside Wyoming?

Yes. My services are available nationwide. Depending on the collection and circumstances, I'll let you know whether an in-person visit makes sense.

Should I clean old coins before an appraisal?

No, please don't. Cleaning can alter a coin's original surfaces and may reduce its collector value. I'd rather see the coins just as you found them, in their original holders.

Should I have the coins professionally graded first?

Not necessarily. Before spending money having a large number of coins graded, call me first. I'll tell you whether it's worth it for what you have.

Do you evaluate paper money as well as coins?

Yes. I specialize in both rare coins and collectible paper money.

What should I do first?

Leave the collection organized as you found it and start with a conversation. Send me a message below or call me at 307-690-0366 and tell me what you know about the collection and what you need.
